SHAWN BOYER, RICHMONDER & GOHAPPY FOUNDER, CONFIRMED AS SPEAKER FOR
SXSW® CONFERENCE IN AUSTIN, TX
SXSW® Conference and Festivals to take place March 9-18, 2018
PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RICHMOND, VA — 10/17/2017
Richmonder Shawn Boyer, goHappy founder and CEO, has been selected to speak at South by Southwest® (SXSW®) on a subject at the very heart of his app’s mission: helping people to live happier, less lonely lives.
Boyer will be part of the panel discussion, “Not Only the Lonely: How We Can All Live Happier Lives,” which will focus on the growing research connecting fulfilling relationships with greater happiness, as well as the role of technology in creating social isolation and how we lift up our lonely neighbors. The panel was selected from a pool of more than 5,600 submissions after an online public vote and vetting via the SXSW® staff and Advisory Board.
For Boyer, the panel goes hand in hand with his work on goHappy, a social app designed to help people actually be social in real life by enabling users to easily find time to get together with friends, keep their plans organized, and share the fun with simple photo-sharing and group messaging. Work is also being completed on a soon-to-be released "Explore" feature that suggests nearby events and activities.
“We started goHappy to help people become more intentional about their most important relationships — getting out there in real life with the ones who matter most to them.” Boyer said. “From the extensive research available and through the conversations we’ve had with those who have studied happiness for decades, it’s clear there is a direct link between spending time with your friends and family, and just how happy you are. And loneliness, a growing health epidemic, stands in the way. So we asked, why can’t we be the ones to put together a conversation, and hopefully a movement, around fighting loneliness? SXSW® seemed like the absolute best venue to try to make this happen. And now we’ve been selected, I’m just ecstatic!”
The panel will also include:
- Billy Baker, a feature writer for the Boston Globe’s Metro section, and a member of the Narrative team, was recently awarded the Deborah Howell Award for Writing Excellence. A graduate of Tulane University, and the Columbia Journalism School, Billy has been writing for the Globe for 7+ years. One of his stories made him a viral sensation: "The biggest threat facing middle-age men isn’t smoking or obesity. It’s loneliness."
- Amy Blankson, an in-demand speaker, author and one of the world’s leading experts on the connection between positive psychology and technology. She is the only person to be named a Point of Light by two presidents (President George H. W. Bush and President Bill Clinton) for creating a movement to activate positive culture change. Blankson has now worked with Google, NASA, the US Army, and the Xprize Foundation to help foster a sense of well-being in the Digital Era. Most recently, she was a featured professor in Oprah’s Happiness course. Amy is the author of two books: The Future of Happiness and an award-winning children’s book called Ripple’s Effect.
- Anika Kumar, a freshman at UC Berkley, who as a high school student channeled her passion to launch Forget Me Not, an intergenerational nonprofit organization that aims to reduce feelings of loneliness among older adults by partnering them with teens in a companionship phone call program. She’s not only fought against the rampant ageism and social isolation that exists today, but she’s also encouraged her peers to do the same.
South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conference and Festivals takes place March 9-18, 2018 in Austin, Tx. A global gathering of big thinkers, CEOs, celebrities, students and others, SXSW® is designed to celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film, music and tech industries while fostering creative and professional growth. Notable speakers for the conference include Darren Aronofsky, Keith Urban, Luvvie Ajayi, W. Kamau Bell, Steve Ballmer, Yiying Lu, Stefan Blom, Ira Glass, Brian Solis and Bree Newsome. Presentation formats range from book readings to keynote addresses, performances, and the four-person panel Boyer is part of.
“Not Only the Lonely: How We All Can Be Happier” is part of SXSW®’s Health and Wellness track, one of 24 thematic areas. The panel will be a one-hour conversation held among Boyer, Blankson, Kumar and Baker. The specific time and date for the panel are TBD.
If you’re attending SXSW®, goHappy can also help you make the most out of your trip and create lasting memories.
“In developing goHappy, we initially focused on creating functionality to help people easily access their contacts and find the very best times to meet up,” Boyer said. “That was the critical blocking and tackling piece,” he added. “Now we’re getting to the fun part: suggesting things to do and places to visit based on your preferences and friends’ recommendations. Soon you’ll be able to do it all from one app: explore the world and your backyard with your favorite people — both building anticipation for these get-togethers and reliving the memories whenever you please thanks to convenient messaging and photo-sharing features.”
The goHappy app is now available for iOS and will be available soon for Android devices and as a web app. To stay up to date regarding new goHappy functionality, you can follow the company on Twitter, Facebook and their goHappyHour blog.
